Cracking your back every now and then isn’t necessarily bad for you, but relying on it as a treatment for what ails you may cause unforeseen problems. As we all know, that familiar ‘popping’ noise after cracking your back can be immensely satisfying, but there are a few alternatives that may have you on the path to recovery.

Start Stretching

If you are cracking your back to alleviate tension, try stretching five minutes after showering. Start by flexing forward, extending backwards, and then bending from side to side. If you would like to stretch further, try this spine stretch to elongate the muscles that run parallel to your spine, or this squat stretch to release built up tension in the spine.

Stretching is very important to both the body and the mind. Knowing this, incorporating at least fifteen minutes of stretching into your daily routine is a must. Stretching creates increased flexibility, improves posture and reduces the risk of injury. You will experience better posture and proper alignment with a daily stretching routine, as you work your muscles and joints. Once properly stretched out, your muscles will be prepared for any exercise movement, reducing the risk of injury.

 Stay Active

Staying active is more beneficial for back pain and discomfort than remaining sedentary. Practicing good posture and lifting techniques will speed up the healing process and decrease the risk of chronic disability.

If physical activity isn’t part of your daily routine, try easing your way into a workout routine. You can start with a short walk or other low impact exercise to gradually strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints in the body.

When you experience a flare-up in your back, it’s easy to grab an ice pack or a heating pad to ease the pain. Unfortunately, these methods only temporarily subdue the flare-up.  Doing little things such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking the dog an extra block will help ease flare-ups or even eliminate them completely.   If however, physical activity – either mild or rigorous – has become a part of your daily routine, you will see a great improvement in posture and alignment.
